What are Common Signs that Toilet Repairs are Needed?

There are many different types of signs that make it clear the toilet needs minor or major repairs. Some of these issues are small and any person can fix them but other problems may need an expert plumber to resolve. It is important that if there are problems with the toilet and plumbing issues that they are resolved as soon as possible to prevent further issues.

Running Toilet

If water constantly flows from the fill valve into the tank means that the toilet is running. This problem of the water continuously running is an issue as it wastes a large amount of water and is costly. The most common reasons why the toilet runs are from the fill tank:

Problem

How to Fix

The water within the tank drops

  • Inspect the flapper and if it does not seal the flush valve opening then this is what causes the water to leak into the bowl constantly. The best way to fix this issue is to have the flapper replaced.
  • If the flapper is not the issue or a new one has been installed and the water still runs then a new flush valve is needed.

Water leaks from the tank or is at a high level so it pours over

  • Look at the fill valve and clean it of debris as this may be preventing the water shut-off mechanism to work.
  • If the fill valve is clean but water is still running then it is best to replace it with a new model.

Leaking Toilet

A leaking toilet should be dealt with as soon as possible to prevent water damage, wasted water and wasted money.

Problem

How to Fix

Water supply valve leaks

  • Turn the nut ⅛ of a turn and inspect the supply line connection to the supply valve and determine if it needs further tightening.
  • If the valve breaks, is older than 5 years or water still leaks then the supply line might need replacing.

Supply line and toilet tank leaks

  • Look over the supply line to the toilet and tighter the system if required.
  • Inspect the fill valve assembly and make sure that it is tightened properly.
  • If these are not the issues then the supply line might need replacing.

Tank and toilet bowl leak

  • Look at the nuts and bolts that secure the toilet bowl to the floor and ensure they are tightened correctly.
  • Determine if the toilet bowl itself has any holes or cracks that are causing the leaks. If there are holes or cracks then it is recommended that the whole toilet is replaced.

Leaks around the base of the toilet

  • Inspect the mourning bolts, toilet flange and wax ring to see if they need tightening, repairing or replacing to resolve the leak.

Water leaking from the side of the tank

  • Look for cracks on the tank and replace the tank if there are cracks present.
